Chinese astronomy boasts a rich history that spans over 3,000 years, beginning as early as the Shang dynasty. As early as 1300 BCE, ancient Chinese astronomers identified and named stars, as evidenced by inscriptions on oracle bones from the mid-Shang dynasty. During this era, the foundational “mansion” (宿 xiù) system, which categorized the night sky into twenty-eight mansions, began to take shape, particularly under the reign of King Wu Ding (1250–1192 BCE).
